Uttarkashi, the land of the holiest Hindu pilgrimage , is often equated with Varanasi or Kashi in divinity. Within the bounds of this beautiful Garhwal landscape, it imbibes the origin of two holiest rivers of India , the Ganga and the Yamuna. Owing to its deep rooted religious connection, this Uttarakhand hill district is also known as 'Devbhumi' (the land of gods and goddesses).

Uttarkashi showcases some ancient Hindu temples. For instance, the temple of Lord Viswanath is located here. A massive iron trident has also been erected on this spot. A description of this temple has been given in the ancient text, the "Kedar Khand" (Skand-Puran).

Other important temples situated here are the Ekadash Rudra, Bhairav and Gyaneshwar. The temple of Goddess Kuteti Devi is situated at the top of hill at a distance of about 1.5 kms.

The Nehru Institute of Mountaineering is also located on a hill above the town, 5 kms away. Close by at Ujeli are a number of ashrams and temples.

Every year, on the occasion of "Magh Mela" (January 14), people from far and near visit Uttarkashi to take a holy dip in the Bhagriathi, along with the idol of their local deities.

A gem studded in the heart of the Garhwal Himalayas , Uttarkashi offers a unique mix of serenity and divinity, wooing your senses with delight!
