Sunderdhunga Glacier Trek

Sunderdhunga is approximately 24 Kms from the village Khati. From Khati one has to go to village Jatoli, which is 7 Kms away. Jatoli is the first night halt enroute to Sunderdhunga Glacier. From Jatoli upto Dhungia Dhaun, about 8 Kms. is a tough trek. One should spend the night in Dhungia Dhuan either in shepherd huts or in pitched tents. Beyond Dhungia Dhuan, it is necessary to take a guide even for experienced and professional trekkers. The next halt is Kathalia, which is 6 to 7 Kms. from Dhungia Dhaun. From Kathalia one can go to both Sukhram and Maiktoli glaciers. They are in opposite directions, 7 Kms. from Kathalia.

Sunderdhunga glacier lies over Sunderdhunga valley and situated west of Pindari Valley. It is surrounded by peaks Panwal in north and Mrigthunii, Mongtoli and Tharkot in the west. The elevation of the glacier spans from 3200 mtrs to 6050 mtrs.

Sunderdhunga literally means “Valley of beautiful stones”. The famous glaciers of this valley are Maiktoli Glacier (6804 M) and Sukhram glacier and main peaks are Tharkot (6100 M), Mrigthuni (6856 M), Maiktoli (6804 M) and Pawali Dwar (6663 metres).

Day 01- Delhi – Nainital

Morning depart by surface for Nainital (260 km/6 hrs drive) and check in at the resort. In the evening, you can walk into the surrounding forest to observe the flora and fauna of the area accompanied by a naturalist. You get back to camp by sundown for campfire and barbecue. Dinner and overnight at the beautiful heritage mansion – The Naini Retreat, a Heritage Hotel.

Day 02- Nainital – Kausani – 110 Kms – 4 Hours Drive

Morning post breakfast depart to Kausani .Overnight at Sun N Snow Inn, Kausani.

Day 03- Kausani – Loharkhet (77 kms/2-3 hrs) - Dhakuri (2680 Mtrs)

Mornings after breakfast drive to Loharkhet and from here we will start our trek up to Dhakuri. It is an 11 km trek today that takes you down into the depths of the valley and then a fair climb to Dhakuri. Dinner and overnight stay in tents/rest house.

Day 04- Dhakuri - Khati (2210 Mtrs)

This is an 8 km trek; Khati is the largest village on this route and is on the banks of the Pinder Ganga.The people here are extremely hospitable and legend has it that they are the descendents of the race who provided shelter to the Pandavas during their exile. Dinner and overnight stay in Tents/Village huts.

Day 05- Khati - Jatoli (2000 Mtrs) 8 kms/5hrs

In the morning trek to Jatoli village, from Khati we will follow the Pindar River up to Warbham - the meeting place of Pindar River and Sunderdhunga stream. Now along Sunderdhunga stream, reach Jatoli crossing boulders ascent for night halt. Dinner & overnight stay in camps.

Day 06- Jatoli - Kathalia (3206 Mtrs) 12 kms/5 hrs

The distance covered today is 12 km through thick alpine forest for more than half the journey. You will also see the Saria River today. Kathalia is the last inhabited village (if you can call it that). Overnight in tents.

Day 07- Kathalia – Sukhram Cave – Sunderdunga View Point (3900 Mtrs)

In the morning we will trek up to Sunderdunga view point that passes through Sukhram Cave. Today we will trek 10 kms and it will take 4-5 hrs to reach over there. On arrival set out camp for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 08- Kathalia – Maiktoli Top (4320 Mtrs)

After breakfast start a trek with a steep climb of 4 kms to reach Maiktoli top and from here you feel that you will touch the peak.The day is memorable for the adventure lover. Back to Kathalia for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 09: Kathalia - Jatoli (12 kms/5 hrs)

Trek back to Jatoli. Dinner and overnight stay in tents.

Day 10: Jatoli – Khati (8 kms/4 hrs)

In the morning trek back to Dhakuri. Dinner and overnight stay in tents.

Day 12: Dhakuri – Loharkhet - Song – Kausani ( Trek 13 Kms / Drive 70 Kms)

Trek all the way to song today 13 km, 5-6 hrs and drive back to Kausani. Overnight at the comforts of this beautiful hotel. Share your experience along the bonfire.

Day 13: Kausani - Corbett – 130 Kms – 5 Hrs

Drive to world famous Corbett National Park via Ranikhet. Arrive Corbett National Park lat evening. Evening folk dance. Indulge in the swimming pool or Grill House. Overnight at The Corbett Hideaway or The River View Retreat.

Day 14- Corbett - Delhi

Early morning game view drive by Elephant or 4WD Jeep. Post Breakfast leave for onward journey.
