Skiing
The thrill of skiing over snow covered terrain remains
unparalleled. As the elements are defeated and unimaginable
distances are traversed, exhilaration swells up. In skiing,
using the simplest forms of support equipment, serves to add to
the adventure experience. Most skis are a long, narrow and
flexible runner with curved front ends to prevent digging into
the snow and the user is attached by bindings, which hold the
ski boots. To aid the process of acceleration and balancing, a
pair of poles with leather strips on the top and sharp metal
tips at the bottom is used to prevent the skier from sinking.
With these elementary implements, the skier triumphs over steep
gradients and often charts new paths.
Auli 16 km from Joshimath and accessible by a good
motorable road and the longest ropeway in Asia, Auli is an ideal
ski destination in India with its slopes comparable to the best
in the world. The Auli slopes, descending from 3049 to 2915 m
(approx 9000 feet), are flanked by stately conifers and oaks,
which cut wind velocity to a minimum. Adding to the thrill of
skiing is a 180 degree view of the nearby Himalayan peaks, which
include Nanda Devi (7817 m), Kamet (7756 m), Mana Parvat (7273
m) and Dunagiri (7066 m), seemingly only a snowball throw away.
The conditions for skiing are perfect at Auli. A 500 m long
ski-lift and an 800 m long chair-lift link the upper and lower
slopes, and snow beaters and snow-packing machines maintain the
smoothness of the slopes. Skiers can enjoy almost 20 km of
virgin slopes, which provide excellent opportunities for
cross-country, slalom(zigzag between obstacles) and down-hill
skiing events.
Joshimath Auli Ropeway The jig back ropeway
system, connecting Joshimath to Auli is the longest in Asia
4 km long. It is also the second highest, operating at an
altitude of 6,000 to 10,200 feet. It takes approx 20 minutes to
get its passengers to Auli at a speed of 3-4 m/sec. It operates
from 8 am to 3.30 pm in the winters and 4.30 pm in summers (last
ride up), and the charge is Rs 400 per person right through the
year. The highlight of the ride is the panoramic view of the
Himalayan mountain range.
