About 24 kms from Haridwar, sitting pretty in the laps of
lower Himalayas, Rishikesh is surrounded by scenic beauty of
the hills on three sides with the Holy Ganga flowing through
it. The whole place is considered to be sacred as it is
believed that meditation at this place leads to attainment of
salvation. Rishikesh travel lets you behold a series of holy
temples-some ancient, some modern, along the river Ganges.
Rishikesh is important not only as pilgrimage centre closely
associated with the Ramayana, but also as home for many
important centers of Hindu religious thought and spirituality.
One of the primary reasons of more and more people
undertaking a religious tour to Rishikesh is its renown as a
very great Yoga Centre. There are a great many ashrams and
yoga institutes here. Rishikesh is also the gateway and the
start-off point for journeys to important religious hubs like
Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri.
Historical records credit the holy land of Rishikesh with the
power of transformation. It is the land where sages first came
to find a splash of holiness along the crashing Ganga before
wandering northwards to the accessible pilgrimage sites.
Ashrams abound along the banks of the holy Ganga, with sadhus
hoping for eternal salvation.
Millions of people flock to attain yoga at Rishikesh .
Rightly credited as the Yoga Capital of the world, Rishikesh
organizes the International Yoga Week (Feb 2-7, 1998) every
year on the banks of the Ganga. Thousands turn up to
participate in this mega event. Even the Beatles sought a new
path here as a few weeks of study with the Maharishi Mahesh
Yogi, which sent their tried and true pop style down a
sinister road of sitar-laden psychedelic. |
