Press Release - Corbett National Park

Hoteliers Optimistic about Tourist Inflow as Corbett National Park Reopens

New Delhi, October 20, 2008: As the Jim Corbett National Park reopens its gates after the monsoon to welcome wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers, resort owners have announced attractive packages and deals to lure visitors after a dull tourist season.

According to Vibhas Prasad, Director, Leisure Hotels, that operates three resorts in the park: “We are hopeful that tourists will continue to throng the park since it will always remain a major tourist attraction because of its varied flora and fauna and its proximity to Delhi. The park has initially opened only for day visit and authorities have said that the night camping would be made available only from November 15.”

Some of the popular resorts that one can opt to stay while in Corbett are Hideaway River Lodge, The Corbett Hideaway & The Corbett River View Retreat. In fact, Hideaway River Lodge is the first private resort that has been allowed to operate in close proximity of the reserve forest in the park and allows the visitors to spend the night on the banks of Ramganga river. The luxury tented resort is located near the reserved Lohachaur Zone where private game views on elephant backs and exclusive angling opportunities on the Ramganga River will be provided.

Corbett Park is one of the greatest National Parks in Asia with over 1,300 sq kms of forests, hills and grasslands, fed by a frisky river. Its proximity to Delhi and prolific wildlife makes Corbett one of the must visit destinations in India. A biodiversity that is rich, rare and precious, it is the perfect habitat for the tiger, elephant, hog deer and many other species. Another attraction much to angler’s delight is the Ramganga River that flows through the park with fattened Mahseer hidden within its water. The park offers a sojourn delight for those who wish to escape the rage of city life and wander close to the tranquility of nature.

A paradise for animal lovers, the park is enveloped with a rich reservoir of flora and fauna. The presence of about 600 odd species of birds out of the total 1200 species found in the world makes it a perfect destination for bird–watchers.

The high density of tigers and wild elephants, the endangered Gharial & Otters and Mahseer angling at the Ramganga River have always been the major tourist attractions in the park. The park is expected to receive 1,50,000 footfalls by the end of the year, which is almost 26 % increase over last year’s figure. To work within the limits of the carrying capacity of the forest, authorities have opened up other areas like Jhirna and Sitabani for day visitors, easing the pressure for daily visits inside the park.

The hotels and resorts at the park are leaving no stones unturned and are coming up with innovative plans to exploit this season’s potential.

According to Mr. Vibhas Prasad, Director, Leisure Hotels, “We are aiming at a mix of both recreational and experiential activities at Corbett this season. This includes exclusive night stays at Forest Rest Houses, jumbo itineraries including bird, elephant & jeep safaris, as well as in house activities like Food Festivals, Cultural Programs & Spa Therapies.”
